And after rebuilding and reinstalling PHP, you did restart Apache?
Check the httpd.conf for the directory containing the modules, and check
that the PHP module in there does match the same file in the build tree
for your rebuilt PHP. You need to confirm that Apache is actually using
the code you patched and then built (you did follow the patching
instructions, didn't you...).
