in fact I had to reinsert the settings in php.ini.

Check your PHP settings as on http://zend.to/phpini.php

The large uploads problem in PHP will not have been affected at all by
the installation of the ZendTo upgrade. But it may affect your php.ini
and apc.ini settings as mentioned on the page above.

Check your PHP build to see if it really is the one you manually built,
and not one replaced by Ubuntu. The datestamp on the php binaries is a
good place to start.
