Sorry for the long delay in replying, I've been in hospital for a bit
(and have to go back in again in a couple of weeks).
Telling people not to update their PHP packages is not a really good
idea, as sometimes there are important security updates in them, which
people will never get if they don't update them.
What you should do is download and install the latest PHP source RPMs
and rebuild the libphp5.so library each time there are any important
updates to PHP. Extra work, I agree. But most of the time you just need
to read the release notes for the new version of PHP and see if the
issues are worth fixing or not. Only you, as the system admin, can make
that call for your own systems.
