Would it be possible to use virtual sites in Apache and create a different front page for internal user and external users depending on the source subnet?  I'm not an apache wizard, but if apache could load a different main_menu.tpl for internal users than outside anonymous users it would solve that issue.  Something like mod_alias, RedirectMatch directive, or maybe mod_rewrite.
