Julian,
I think I know what he is referring to as I just finished installing
the ZendTo version 4.05-3 64-bit CentOS Virtual Machine (
http://zend.to/files/ZendTo-CentOS-x64-4.05-3.zip ).

If you perform a 'yum update" after creating the vm, yum downloads the
latest clam packages from the pre-configured epel repository.
The clam package changed the following in the /etc/freshclam.conf and
/etc/clamd.conf files:
DatabaseOwner changed from clamav to clam ( which also created
another clamav owner in the /etc/passwd file).

DatabaseDirectory changed from /var/clamav to /var/lib/clamav

I also deleted the /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log as it's ownership had
conflicts and just let freshclam re-create the file. (You could have
also just changed the file ownership).

thanks
Brad

Which version of the VM are you using? I thought I had already fixed
this problem.

Jules – I discovered an apparent mismatch this afternoon between the
identities used by clamd and freshclam on the CentOS VM, which seemed to
be preventing freshclam from downloading and installing updates. You may
want to check this before the next VM release. (I got round it by making
them use the same uid but I don’t know if that is the “official” way to
do it).
