excuse my redhat/cent ignorance, i usually work with debian based systems.

 I downloaded el5 for all the dependencies b/c im running centos 5.4; was that wrong?

You need to go to http://packages.sw.be/ and go into the clamav directory. Then download the el4 versions of the ClamAV rpms. You will need the main clamav one, the db, and clamd. You don't need the devel or the milter but you will need the others.

Then do a "freshclam" then "service clamd start" and "chkconfig clamd on".

Then it should work okay.

I must add this to the docs, by doing a complete from-scratch RPM installation myself and working out everything that is needed. That sounds like a good job for tomorrow :-)

In the mean time, any notes you have about the RPM installation would be much appreciated.
