For me that looks like all it would take to start testing with users
inside and outside my environment.

This is what eventually would replace our FTP site that we use now.

Since we won't tie it to AD, we would setup a local general account for
internal users to use if they wanted to dump a file on the ZendTo box to
send to someone outside our environment.

Yes, agreed, that would be a good idea. I can't see a feasible
SASL-based authentication module for PHP, which is a great shame, as
that would be the ideal answer.

So it would have to be a simple SQL-based user+password table. But I
reckon I could write one.
Basically you need
- the auth ability in the ZendTo authenticator
- command to add a user
- command to delete a user
- command to set a user's password
I would just store the username and the MD5 hash of the password in the
SQL table.

Need anything more than that to get going?
