Agreed.

As more functionality has gradually crept out of the core code and into 
the templates (more new JS, less new PHP), I am having to change the 
templates more between versions. That makes upgrading a lot harder if 
you have significantly modified the templates.

So some sort of "Allow External Logins" switch in preferences.php is 
what you have in mind, yes?

The other thing someone else has suggested today is removing the blue 
"Login" button from the main menu altogether if the "mini login box" is 
being shown at the top. It doesn't add any functionality in that 
situation, so is just clutter.
