It may well not touch the .rrd file if you recently ran it. It knows
it's collecting daily stats, so will only write to the file if there is
new data to calculate. But if it is run twice 24 hours apart, I would
think it should write to the file.
It works fine on my installations on RHEL6. RRD is a bit of an odd one,
as it does various clever tricks so it never expands the size of the
data file, regardless how much data it has collected. See if there's
anything in the man page that makes it run verbosely.
