I've got one more idea, which I will try to test as soon as I can.
Make a clone of your current VM and try this on the clone, as it may not
help.
Remove the php-apc module first, if you're running CentOS then something
like
rpm -e php52-apc
or
rpm -e php5-apc
or
rpm -e php-apc
should do it.
Then do
# pecl install apc
and it will download and build the very latest version.
Don't forget to restart Apache/httpd after doing this.
